Hi from Italy! I posted a Q&A on Instagram during my flight over and wanted to give a couple questions the proper response they deserved, along with what I’ve been wearing on the trip so far.
How do you decide which The Row pieces are worth buying?
This might be controversial, but I don’t believe in cost per wear. What I think is more valuable: is this piece filling a real gap in your wardrobe? Are you going to love it just as much a year from now? If the answer is yes to both, the last thing I’d factor in is being at peace with potentially seeing the same item marked down at the end of the season or on TRR in a few months. It does happen and it’s worth sitting with before you buy!
Lately it feels like there’s an extreme scarcity mindset (especially when a new collection is released and everything is somehow immediately sold out), which tends to fuel impulse purchases. Being patient pays off. Everything comes back around, and by that point you’ll also know whether or not the “want” was fleeting. For example, I’ve wanted these boots for months but my size was harder to find thanks to the Zoë Kravitz effect. I stayed patient (persistent?) and found them for an incredible price here.
[What’s the] best black bag?
Without breaking this down into subcategories, my answer is 100% the Cecily. It could have been the only evening bag I brought on this trip and I would have been completely fine. There are a bunch of new colors, materials, and sizes, but the original black satin has been consistently one of my most reached for bags since I bought it last spring. Hard to come by now but worth keeping an eye out!
If you’re not looking to spend over $1K on a satin dinner bag (completely reasonable), I think the best move is to throw [satin top handle bag] into any resale site for something a bit more unique and special.
Generally speaking, I think the best bags right now are raffia and worn over the shoulder. I've noticed so many chic women vacationing with a version of this bag and I completely understand why. Otherwise, this has been a great black bag that converts to a clutch with the handle tucked in. I use this one constantly in brown but LOVE it in black, and its a style that is often available on TRR.
On to outfits— happy to report that I’ve been completely set with what I have, and could have consolidated even further since I’ve been reaching for the same things. I really love living out of a suitcase with only a few options; it’s wild how much easier it is to get dressed, feel inspired and be creative with less to choose from.
A few noteworthy items that are getting the most wear:
Beach Flip Flops: I know, I know— but I’ve worn them every single day with zero break-in time required. These are very similar.
Black Linen Shift Dress: Worn far more than anticipated to breakfast, to the pool, to anywhere I didn’t want anything clinging to me. My exact dress has limited sizing but there are so many other great versions like this or this
White Slip Skirt: clean, easy, comfortable— more details below but probably my #1 item of the trip. Or maybe this.
Sheer Long Sleeve: call me insane given the heatwave but after the sun goes down it’s nice to cover up a bit especially by the water. Similar here.
