Summer Preview
Vacation outfits loading
I thought I’d share a little preview of what’s inside my carry-on since I’m officially on DND, and posting in real time is something I need to get better at!
My travel outfits are very similar to my opinions, as they are always subject to change. In a recent letter, I broke down how to build a cohesive, realistic capsule with pieces you’re confident and comfortable in, a few fun statement or seasonal items, and always an emergency sweater. Rewear the things that only work a few months of the year, and give yourself permission to just enjoy being somewhere new.
My trip starts by the water and ends in the city, with a wedding on the agenda— which, as far as carry-on packing challenges go, is a solid one.
It’s that season for us all, so I figured I'd start here. Dress shopping can be time consuming to say the least, especially when going down the vintage route— so when I need to be efficient I always trust this designer. Ironically the item I’ll only be wearing once this trip requires the most space, but that's what a great garment bag is for. It folds into thirds, sits pretty seamlessly on top of an open tote bag, and even has zippered compartments for accessories which is genius.
Moving along to my favorite category of outfits, the ones that work across scenarios and don’t require a second change. These are the outfits I look forward to wearing the most as they tow the line between laid back and intentional while suiting whatever the day brings.
Realistically for time spent by the water, I will be wearing these shorts and top in lieu of a coverup, but for when the mood strikes, a bathing suit will also work under any of these options.
I can almost guarantee these outfits will be modified based on what I actually feel like wearing in real time, along with some other outfits, but this is how I build the foundation. Then with whatever extra space is left, I’ll add in a few alternatives that work seamlessly.
Admittedly, there are items I still go overboard on for no good reason other than peace of mind. Shoes are typically the culprit but I’m proud to note that beyond the two sandals, one slide and one heel above, my Ponti slippers felt like the perfect plane shoe to wear with this sleep set and a scarf for the long haul.
One area I always streamline is skincare thanks in large part to the most unassuming makeup pouch that is truly a Mary Poppins bag. I pair back my routine when I’m away but everything I need somehow fits into this one bag: makeup, skincare, hair, all of it.
Of all the pouches I have it’s nice to travel with one that isn’t so precious. I always throw in my full-size Vintner’s Daughter serum and essence since it’s TSA approved and really all you need, but they just launched a new discovery set that’s an even better option. I love a mini anything, and for shorter trips I’ll sometimes just bring samples sizes so I can toss them out and feel lighter on the way home.
Final note: last year the entire first half of a trip to Italy was completely rained out and I wore exactly zero of the outfits I had planned. A humbling but almost necessary experience and still managed to be one of my favorite trips. Trust that the best parts rarely go according to plan.
I’ll be sharing more of what I actually wear in my next letter, so if you’re not already subscribed, I’d love for you to follow along!
